Children are growing up in a rapidly changing, interactive digital society. This raises important questions: What are children experiencing online? How do children interact with their online world? What are they running into? And - perhaps most importantly - how can they behave in a digital resilient way?
Our PhD Ying Chuck is researching the online world of children. To better understand that world, and especially to give children a voice in the conversation about their digital resilience, she and other members of the Movez Lab developed the MediaMovez program.
Thanks to valuable feedback from children as well as our own experiences as facilitators in various participatory projects, we have been able to improve the MediaMovez Program. We are therefore happy to make the program available to researchers, teachers and other professionals who want to discover - together with children - how children can move resiliently in their online world.
What is the MediaMovez Program?
MediaMovez is a participatory (research) program consisting of six sessions in which elementary school children in group 6, 7 and 8 (ages 8-12) become co-researchers of their own online world. In three phases - explore, understand and solve - they reflect on their own online experiences and actively engage in questions such as:
- What does my online world look like?
- What opportunities does my online world present?
- What are my online challenges?
- What can I do to address those challenges?
- Why am I not doing that yet? And what and who can help me to do it?
The goal? To empower children to move in their online world with resilient behaviors that fit their own needs and desires.
